First step Fitness Center
We at Healing House Inc. believe not only healing the mind and soul but we also believe that we must focus on healing our bodies as well. Many in recovery have wrecked their bodies through their life. Physical fitness is a huge part in recovery because not only does it help us become more heathy is has been proven to impact mental health as well.
Fitness and Recovery
Physical fitness is crucial in the road to recovery from a substance abuse disorder on so many levels. Stress, physical activity release feel-good endorphins in the brain and improves circulation, both of which help with stress. It improves sleep and which can be hard with those suffering from this disease. According to the Mayo Clinic, just 30 minutes of exercise per day is enough to affect a positive change in mood. A collection of studies suggest that regular exercise can increase the abstinence rate for substance use by 95% .
Open to all, not just Healing House.
Our fitness center is not only for our participants but it is open to the community as well. We understand the impact that it has in the recovery community but also how much the community prospers with a healthy physical lifestyle.
Communities that participate in sport and recreation develop strong social bonds, are safer places and the people who live in them are generally healthier and happier than places where physical activity isn’t a priority.
Regular exercise can have a profoundly positive impact on depression, anxiety, and ADHD. It also relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better, and boosts your overall mood. And you don’t have to be a fitness fanatic to reap the benefits.
Healing not just the body...
According to a study done by Frontiers in Psychiatry on the National Institute of Health, “Accumulating evidence shows that exercise influences many of the same signaling molecules and neuroanatomical structures that mediate the positive reinforcing effects of drugs or alcohol. These studies have revealed that excise produces protective effects in procedures designed to model different transitional phases that occur during the development of, and recovery from a substance use disorder.”
